Today I’m going to talk about digging your well before you’re thirsty. I know so many people who procrastinate and put off their important tasks for later and it is something that affects your life massively. They say that they’re going to get it done tomorrow or next week or basically some other day. A well known Tony Robbins phrase goes like this, “The road to someday leads to a town called nowhere.” This is a painfully accurate statement.
Therefore I will always tell you to dig your well before you are thirsty.
Prepare Your Business Now
The worst time to build a business is when you need it the most. You shouldn’t start to build your business after you’ve already lost your job or are desperately in need of money. Never wait for a do-or-die situation before you actually decide to take action. Instead, I would strongly urge you to start implementing your ideas when you are standing on firm ground.
We all get very few opportunities in life and if we haven’t prepared ourselves to seize them, they’re just going to pass us by. Maybe you have a chance to be mentored by a great mentor, or you have an awesome job proposal or maybe you have the perfect business partner to work with. In any of these scenarios, if you haven’t prepared yourself for these opportunities, you’re going to end up watching them fly by. Remember, you shouldn’t wait for an opportunity to arrive before you prepare for it. You shouldn’t start working for something only when you have become desperate. You shouldn’t start digging a well only when you’re thirsty.
Best Ways to Invest In Yourself
What you need to do is start investing in your life, in yourself, in your knowledge and in your skills before you actually require them. Once an opportunity comes to you and you are unprepared for it, you will most definitely lose it. Do not wait until you are out on the street before you start building your business. Do not wait until you have mountains of bills to pay. Start today itself and you will be prepared to grab the opportunity when it decides to come your way. Prepare yourself for the big show so that when it actually happens, you will be ready to face the situation headfirst.
However, if you don’t start preparing, you are going to have to watch it all pass by and remain helpless and unprepared.
So stop putting off all that work for someday. Get up and do it now. Start preparing yourself. Start building up your skills and experiences because otherwise it’s going to be too late once you need them by your side. If you plan to keep this aside for the future and start working on yourself only when you get the hint of an opportunity, you’ll definitely not be ready enough and will lose out.
I like to think of it this way: if you’re fighting a battle, you need to train for it way before the actual event or else there is no point or way out. Therefore, if you start preparing yourself for your battle today, you will be fully ready to fight it once it hits you in the face.
Win The Battle In Advance
“Victorious warriors win first and then go to war, while defeated warriors go to war first and then seek to win.” – Sun Tzu, The Art of War
Every single day, I see way too many people who are sitting back and not putting any effort into investing in themselves. They are not learning constantly and neither are they collecting experiences with every passing moment. They are wasting precious time and opportunities to learn and develop skills. If you are one of those people, then I’m afraid I have some really bad news for you.
As I have repeatedly mentioned, you are going to lose out on big opportunities and will not be able to cope up with your needs.
Here is what you should always keep in mind:
You need to build yourself all day, every day. You need to invest in yourself by constantly reading books, watching videos and training. You must absorb all the knowledge that you can, every single second. You need all the experiences and knowledge in your time of crisis and you cannot wait for that time to arrive before you start gathering all that knowledge. Just remember, whatever you want to do, you must go ahead and do it. Taking massive action from this very second is important and it’ll help you prepare for the future.
Even if you don’t want to start your business this very moment, you cannot afford to slack off and remain inactive. You must constantly prepare yourself for it so that when you want to start it, you have all the necessary skill and information and are able to take care of it properly. If you dive into working on yourself from today itself, you can simply quit your job and get your business up when the time comes. That way, you will be making sure that when you’re thirsty, your well is already there.
