Today I’m going to talk about how to develop willpower and how to use it effectively in order to control your life. Willpower is the most scarce resource that we have as humans. We all think that we have control over our lives when in reality, we are just creatures of habit.
Whatever we do is just out of habit. We tend to think that we are steering the ship of our lives and that we have complete control over it. The reality, however, is that it is your habitual brain that is controlling your life. You could say that your life is running on auto-pilot.
Get More Out Of Yourself
The only way to gain influence on our lives, to change our lives, is to change our habits. There are no quick fixes or shortcuts. You need to change your habits if you are to change your life and the only way to change your habits is through raw will power. Willpower is the tool that can help you change your life. Your life is running on autopilot and the only way to change that is to change your habits. And to change your habits you need strong willpower. There is no way around it.
Changing habits is very difficult and the problem with will power is that it’s very limited. We have a limited amount of will power that we can work with to change our lives. However, most people do not reach this point. Most people don’t even realize that they do not have control over their lives. They live under the illusion that they are in full control of their lives. I personally know an alcoholic who actually thinks that he is choosing to have three beers daily. That is only a rationalization to think that you are in control when you’re really an addict. A lot of people do this. They rationalize their behaviour to think that they are in complete control.
Another example is, “I choose to work in a job rather than have my own business.” That’s a rationalization so that you feel that you’re in control of your life. Maybe you do like working in a job or maybe you don’t.
But most of the time, it’s just a rationalization.
If you want to move forward in your life and especially if you want to become an entrepreneur, you must stop telling yourself these lies. Understand how you are living your life right now. Understand that right now, you are living your life by habits and your life is on autopilot.
The only way to change that is by using raw willpower. That’s the most important thing you need to cultivate in your life. Honestly, if I can choose to increase and improve something in myself and my business, it would be will power.
Two Simple Willpower Hacks
I’ll show you how willpower works. Here are a few willpower hacks to make it easier for you to use your willpower. Let’s face it: it is hard to use willpower. We all want to change our lives, some way or the other. I promise you that every single person you meet in your lives would like to change something or the other about themselves. The solution to that change is willpower and many people find it very difficult to use that willpower or use it effectively.
Willpower is basically like a muscle of the mind in the sense that the more you use it, the stronger it grows. Most people don’t use it long enough. It’s like going to the gym. You need to go to the gym a lot of times before you get stronger.
It’s the same with willpower. You need to use your willpower again and again and it will grow stronger. Your personal power will grow and your ability to change your habits will increase.
Here’s a simple willpower hack. Your willpower is the strongest in the beginning of the day. If you have something important that you need to do, you must do it in the beginning of your day. When you wake up in the morning you are like a blank slate and your batteries are reloaded. This is when you should exercise your will power.
All the big tasks that you need to do, all the tasks that are hard for you to do, you must do them in the morning. The more the time passes in your day, the harder it becomes for you to use your willpower.
The Secret to Develop Willpower and Kill Resistance
This is the reason why procrastination is so widespread. If you want to lose weight, you must focus on eating the right things and working out in the morning. If you plan to do some cold calling and you’re apprehensive about it because you’ve never done it before, you need to do it in the morning. Anything that you plan to change or anything that’s hard for you to do, you must do them in the morning. All the tasks that are very stressful for you, all the tasks that you do not want to do, all the tasks that you have put off for a very long time, all the tasks that have a lot of resistance from your side, do them at the very beginning of your day.
The same principle also applies to the beginning of your week. You have the most willpower at the beginning of your week. Usually, Monday to Wednesday is when you have the most willpower. You can work on the most important tasks in your life during these days. However, from Thursday onwards, your willpower decreases. This is why Mondays are extremely important. I get the most stuff done on Mondays. That’s when I start strong and have a perfect productive day and focus on a lot of productive work. I do all the stuff that is needed to be done and the stuff that needs the muscle of my willpower.
I do my biggest tasks from Monday to Wednesday and from Thursday onwards, I have a productivity drop. Not that I don’t get anything done from Thursday to Sunday, but I will be most productive during the first half of the week. The reason behind is that my willpower is at its peak from Monday to Wednesday and it slowly fades away after that.
Remember, this rule is very important. Your willpower is at its height at the beginning of your day or your week. During these times, you must focus on those habits that you want to change or difficult tasks that you have been putting off. Always focus on these things at the beginning of the week and never at the end of one.
Start Your Day Powerfully
Most people start slow and their week just wears off without them getting anything done. If you start your day with procrastination, it’s over. The way you start your day is the way you end your day. The way you start your week is the way you end your week. And as we have learnt, your day is a miniature version of your life.
Follow these simple hacks and you will soon see that you have gained more control over your life and your habits. Once you’ve done something long enough, it turns into auto-pilot behaviour.
So this is how it all works. This is how you kill procrastination. This is how you use your willpower. The more you use your willpower, the more you focus on tasks that you hate doing or have a hard time doing and the more you overcome that internal resistance and overcome procrastination. By using these simple principles like focusing on the task you hate doing the most or like doing it earlier on in the week, you can make a tremendous difference in your life.
I would suggest you play around and experiment with this and I hope it has the same amazing impact on your life as it has had on mine.
